A Sanctuary for the City

ABOUT US

We are a parish committed to Gospel Formation for Missional Presence in the urban heart of Richmond. The good news of Jesus transforms us into people that participate in God's mission in the world. We believe the Church is not a sub-culture, a building, or a movement but the making of a new humanity.

Why did you purchase 1801 Park Ave.?

Our parish is rapidly outgrowing our rented space and, because we have a deep commitment to presence in the city, we have been actively searching for a permanent place to gather. The ethos of our church is self-consciously a renewed, fresh approach to a very ancient tradition. We are interested in expressing this intersection of new and old architecturally in the renovation and refurbishing of an old church building.

What kind of renovation is being done?

Our plan is to bring this historic building back to life. We hope that it will not only serve the needs of our parish, but also those of our neighbors here in the city. We have engaged an architect and contractor that have experience in renovating historic buildings who are guiding us through this process. At minimum, the building requires new roofing, electrical, plumbing, and HVAC. We have no intention to significantly change the exterior, however many interior ceilings, walls, and floors will need to be replaced or significantly repaired as well.

How long will construction take?

We believe it’s safe to assume the renovation process will take 18-24 months.

Who can I contact with any questions?

If you have any questions about our renovation work or our parish, please email info@redeemerrva.org.

1801 Park Ave.

Originally built in 1910 and listed on the National Register of Historic Places, 1801 Park has been a house of worship and prayer for multiple congregations over the years, including Monument Methodist Church (which merged with Union Station Methodist in 1951 to become Reveille United Methodist) and Community Church of God in Christ (CCOGIC), which purchased the building in 1976. We look forward to continuing the stewardship of this building as a place of worship and refuge for our neighbors in the city.

Deep human questions need more than doctrinal answers, they need embodied beliefs.

Our parish is organized around seven practices that address the deep human questions we all ask. Our dream is that as we practice this kind of Gospel Formation together we will embody the missional presence of Jesus to our friends, our neighbors, our coworkers, and our city.
